  1. Turn down your thermostat to 68 degrees. For every degree you lower your heat in the 60 to 70-degree range, you’ll save up to 5 percent on heating costs.
  2. Turn your thermostat to 55 degrees when you leave your home for an extended period of time. This will save you 5-20 percent of your heating costs.
  3. Replace or clean furnace filters as recommended. Dirty filters can restrict airflow and increase energy use.
  4. Now is also the time for a furnace “tune-up.” Keeping your furnace clean, lubricated and properly adjusted will reduce energy use, saving up to 5 percent of heating cost.
  5. Reduce hot water temperature. Set your water heater to the “normal” setting or 120-degrees Fahrenheit, unless the owner’s manual for your dishwasher requires a higher setting. Savings are 7-11 percent of water heating cost.
  6. Seal up any leaks. Caulk leaks around windows and doors. Look for places where you have pipes, vents or electrical conduits that go through the wall, ceiling or floor.
  7. Consider replacing your old gas appliances with an Energy Star water heater or furnace.

Here are some spring tips that will improve your heating and cooling system’s performance.

1.Schedule an air conditioner tune-up

The best thing you can do to ensure your air conditioner works great all summer long is to schedule a tune-up. With a tune-up you are bringing your system up to its peak performance and efficiency levels. This is the best way to avoid breakdowns this summer and keep your cooling bills low.

2.Stock up on air filters

Your air filter should be checked and/or changed every month. By stocking up on filters now, you’ll never be tempted to procrastinate on changing it.

3.Replace batteries in alarms

Spring and fall are the two seasons when you should change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. This will ensure that those detectors will go off if your air conditioner begins to operate in an unsafe manner.

4.Seal air leaks around doors and windows

Some people think that it’s only important to seal windows and doors during the winter months, but that’s not true! Air leaks will waste money all year long. During the cooling season, they allow cool air from your air conditioner to seep outside and warm air from outside to seep indoors. By sealing up your doors and windows with caulk and weather stripping, you can keep your home more comfortable, lower your cooling bills and improve your family’s allergy symptoms.

 5.Perform spring cleaning

Spring cleaning is great because it allows you to declutter your home and make everything look fresh and new. It’s also a good way to improve your home’s air quality at the source, because you can remove dirt and dust from around your home that would otherwise get caught up in your home’s airflow and clog up your filter.

6.Change the direction of your ceiling fans

If you changed the direction of your ceiling fans for winter, now is the time to change them back for the summer. Ceiling fans produce a wind-chill effect that make rooms feel cooler, which allows you to raise your thermostat setting in order to save some energy.

7.Put drapes or curtains on exposed windows

The sun is a significant source of heat gain in your home if you have uncovered windows that face its rays. By installing drapes or curtains on windows that get a lot of sunlight, you can block out some of that heat gain and ease the load on your air conditioner.

Are you really saving money?

If you’ve purchased a washing machine or dishwasher in the last few years, your model probably includes economy settings. Now is a good time to ask yourself if you have ever used the appliance in conservation mode? There can be good reasons to use, or not use, the eco-settings on your plumbing installations. Read on to learn more about when economy settings are a good idea, and when they could actually end up costing you more in utility bills.

Just about every energy star-certified dishwasher, washing machine and water heater has a setting that allows you to conserve even more. Eco-settings for plumbing installations save you money twice, once for a reduction in water consumption, and once more by using less electricity or gas to heat the water.

However, there is another side to this story. In some cases, the option can decrease the performance of your appliance to the point where it doesn’t meet your standards. If the eco-setting can’t accomplish the job that the appliance is designed for, it doesn’t do you much good for saving water, energy or money. Worse, if the dishwasher or washing machine doesn’t get things sufficiently clean, you have to run it twice, using more energy than you would if you just operated it in the normal mode.

Buyer Beware

Where you can really run into trouble with economy settings is if you purchase an appliance based on its conservation claims, only to find that the reduced mode doesn’t perform satisfactorily. In many cases, you might be better off buying a different unit altogether. That’s why it’s important to look beyond the energy star rating and check out consumer reviews of the products you buy so you get a sense of how they have worked for other people.

Finally, don’t forget that your own behavior plays a role in an appliance’s performance as well. If you overload a washer or dishwasher, or use settings inappropriate for the task, they might not work properly whether in economy mode or not. Make sure you are following all the manufacturer’s instructions for a device before deciding that the eco-setting is what is causing the problem.

Choosing Wisely

It can be hard choosing from so many appliances to find the model that works best for you. If you need help picking out economical appliances or plumbing installations contact us today for our expert opinion.

The holiday season is upon us! We at Affordable Heating, Cooling & Plumbing understand the value of good, solid piping and structure in your home. We want everyone to be more educated and knowledgeable when it comes to plumbing. The holidays are a time for family and friends, we don’t want to see you stuck with a plumbing emergency. Extra guests around the holidays put a strain on a home’s plumbing system, which results in more emergency calls. We don’t want to see this happen to you, read our tips and tricks below to try and avoid this!

Kitchen Plumbing:

  • Avoid pouring fats or cooking oils down the drain because liquid fats solidify in the pipes and create clogs.
  • Wipe congealed grease from pots.
  • Never put hard to grind, stringy, fibrous waste into the garbage disposer.
  • Run cold water down the drain for about 15 seconds before and after using the garbage disposer to flush waste down the main line.
  • Turn on the disposer before adding food debris.
  • Run the dishwasher at night or at off times to conserve hot water and maintain adequate water pressure for your guests.

Bathroom Plumbing:

  • Plan ahead, spread out showers throughout the day; wait 10 minutes between showers rather than taking one right after another.
  • Turn up the water heater slightly to retain hot water. To avoid scalding, do not exceed 125°F.
  • If shower pressure is weak, pour a cup of vinegar into a plastic bag, place it over the shower head, and soak. Use a twist tie to hold it in place overnight. In the morning, remove the bag and use an old toothbrush to gently scrub off the mineral deposits to help restore water flow.

Prevent Frozen Pipes

If water freezes within a pipe, it will expand and crack the pipe. Just like that soda pop can experiment you may have tried when you were younger, you will notice the expansion and explosion when you freeze it. The same thing happens within a frozen pipe, which ultimately can cost you time and money.

The water expanding into ice within the pipe can cause an increase in water pressure. This blockage can create excessive pressure throughout the system and cause pipe failure in vulnerable places. Generally, water pipes in higher places like attics, garages, crawl spaces, or outside walls are typically the most vulnerable locations for a potential frozen pipe emergency.

Prevent Frozen Pipes:

  • Install pipes in an insulated place.
  • Bury pipes lower in the ground, below frost line.
  • Install pipes in heated spaces, avoid attics and garages whenever possible.
  • Fit pipes with insulation sleeves or wrapping.
  • Letting a faucet drip during extreme cold weather can prevent a pipe from bursting.

Hopefully, these tips and tricks can help you avoid a plumbing disaster this holiday season. If you have any questions, please contact us! Happy holidays from everyone here at Affordable Heating, Cooling & Plumbing!

Did you know that the hottest temperature recorded in Wilson, NC is 107 degrees back in 1952? Here in Eastern North Carolina, meteorologists are no strangers to unforeseen temperate outbursts, especially during the winter months. Perhaps the heat isn’t usually that hefty, but when summer days are steadily staggering through the eighties, it’s more than likely that you’re going to want to seek refuge indoors.

However, that malfunctioning air conditioner of yours isn’t going to fulfill your comforting and cooling indoor retreat. But how were supposed to know that you even needed an air conditioning repair in the first place? Well, there are a few minor things you can simply take note of and jot down and then, you will have your answer.

Temperate or No?

Well if it at least turned on, that’s a good start. Have you noticed your utility bills rise the more you use your AC unit? The first apparent sign that you may need to seek the help of a professional air conditioning repair technician, is noticing little to no temperature difference throughout your home. First, check out the thermostat; your home should be a few degrees warmer than what the thermostat is reading. Examine your outdoor AC unit; you should be able to feel cool air and hear little to no noise. Can you feel an adequate supply of air coming from the vents?

Filter Check

Do your properly maintain your air conditioner? The condition of your air conditioner can cause the sheer inadequate home-comfort signs that your unit may needs an air conditioning repair. Check your air filter. When it’s clogged, a slew of problems can trail behind including increased energy consumptions, unfiltered, dirty air circulating throughout your home, hot and cold spots, overheating and frozen evaporator coils.

A clogged air filter requires the air handler to work much harder due to blocked air flow. This can lead to your unit overheating and eventually, break down. Frozen evaporator coils will restrain airflow not allowing enough heat to reach to the coils. This will lead to the evaporator coils freezing, shutting your unit down.

Puddle Problems

If there are puddles of water next to your furnace, then you most likely need an air conditioning repair. An AC unit generates moisture in the form of condensate. If after the water collects and flows out into the sump basin, that there is any accumulation, there could be an obstruction of the tube.

Time to Fix

If your home isn’t much of a cool retreat, or if your AC unit is making loud humming or ticking noises, has a clogged filter or a puddle of problems around the furnace, there may be some fixing up to do. Enjoy the sunny warm weather in Wilson and Rocky Mount, NC this coming spring and summer, and let the professionals at Affordable Heating Cooling & Plumbing take care of your air conditioning repair needs.
